Honeymoon Photo Book Ideas That Tell the Whole Trip

A honeymoon photo book is the one trip book most couples mean to make and never do, and then wish they had at the first anniversary. This post gives you a structure that works for any honeymoon, whether it was ten days in Bali or a long weekend in Coorg: five chapters, captions that do not make you cringe, a straight answer on size, and a plan for printing it again a year later.

Why the honeymoon book is different

A normal trip book is about a place. A honeymoon book is about two people who happened to be in a place. The sunset over the water is fine, but the photo of one of you asleep on the airport floor at 4 am is better. You will come back with hundreds of photos and only a handful are about the two of you. Those are the book. So you both need to be in it: ask strangers, use the timer, hold the phone at arm’s length. A book where one person appears in three photos looks like a solo trip with a guest.

How do you structure a honeymoon photo book?

Not day by day. Day by day gives you breakfast, beach, dinner, six times in a row. Use chapters. These five fit a 26 page A4 book with a page left at each end for a wedding photo and the flight home.

Arrival. Start with one wedding photo, or the two of you at the airport with the mehendi still dark. It anchors the book in time. Then the first day: the flight, the drive in, the hotel room before the bags exploded. Unflattering, and the ones you will look at longest.

The two of you. The middle of the book, and the reason for making it. Mix the posed ones with the accidents: the stranger who cut off your feet, the mirror selfie in the lift, the one where you are both laughing at something neither of you remembers. Put the single best photo on a page by itself.

The food. Couples argue about whether this chapter deserves four pages. It does. Ten years from now you will not remember the name of the cafe. The photo of the plate will bring back the whole afternoon.

Put the bad day in

Every honeymoon has one. The scooter broke down, the hotel lost the booking, one of you was sick and the other spent the day hunting for Electral in a foreign pharmacy. A year later it is the story you tell at every dinner.

Give it a spread. Use the photos you nearly deleted: the rain through the window, the pharmacy bag, the two of you looking miserable on a bench. Write a caption that tells the truth. “We fought about the map for forty minutes. The map was wrong.” It is the page guests stop at.

Captions that do not make you cringe

Honeymoon captions go wrong in one direction: too sweet. “Forever with my love” under every photo reads like a greeting card by page six. Write them the way you actually talk to each other. Short. A place and a fact. A private joke nobody else needs to get.

One caption per spread, not per photo. Let most photos sit quietly.
Write what happened, not what you felt. “He ordered the spiciest thing on the menu and then ate my rice.” The feeling comes through anyway.
Put the date and place on each chapter opener and leave it off everywhere else.

Which size is right for a honeymoon photo book?

If the book is going on the coffee table and you want the place to look big, go A4. If it is going on the shelf beside the bed and you want something you flip through in five minutes, go 10x10 inch.

My opinion, and it is the one I give friends: the Classic, and stop at around 70 photos rather than filling it to 90. Empty space on a page is not wasted. It is what makes the photo beside it look expensive.

The first anniversary reprint

Make the book now, while the trip is fresh and the captions come easily. Then, at the first anniversary, make it again with one new chapter at the end: a spread of the first year. The flat you moved into, the first Diwali as a married couple, both sets of parents at one table.

Before you order

Cull to under 100 photos before you open the app.
Check that both of you appear roughly equally.
Write the bad day caption first. It is the easiest one and it sets the tone for the rest.
