Diwali Gift Ideas 2026 Built Around a Photo Book
Most Diwali gift ideas fall into two boxes: something sweet that is finished by Bhai Dooj, or something shiny that goes into a cupboard. A photo book is the third box. This post is about Diwali gift ideas with a photo book at the centre: which book to make for parents, for in-laws, for a sibling abroad, and for the family WhatsApp group that has never all been in one room. Why a photo book works as a Diwali gift
Diwali gifting has a problem. Everyone gives the same things to everyone. Dry fruit boxes go round the colony and come back to you. The nicer the household, the harder it is to buy for, because they have already bought whatever they wanted.
A photo book breaks the pattern because it cannot be bought off a shelf. It is made of the year that just went: the Goa trip in February, the cousin’s wedding in May, the new flat, the baby’s first birthday. Nobody else can give it. And unlike a box of kaju katli, it is still on the coffee table next Diwali.
You already have the photos. They are on your phone, in the family group, in the wedding photographer’s Google Drive link that nobody downloaded. The work is choosing, not creating.
Gift ideas by who is receiving it
For parents
The year in one book. Pick 60 to 90 photos from January to now, keep them in date order, and let the book tell the year. Parents notice what you noticed, and this is proof that you noticed. Different rule here. Make the book about their side, not yours. Their grandchildren, their home during last Diwali, the puja at their place, the family lunch where their son or daughter looked happy. For a sibling abroad
A brother in Dubai or a sister in Toronto will not be home on 8 November. They will be on a video call at an odd hour, watching the diyas through a phone screen. A book of the year they missed lands harder than anything they can order where they live. Include the ordinary things: Sunday breakfast, the dog, the new paint in the drawing room. They miss the ordinary more than the occasions.

When should I order a photo book for Diwali 2026?
Diwali is on Sunday 8 November. Gifts start moving from Dhanteras, which is Friday 6 November. So you want the book in hand by 4 November.
Delivery is free and tracked, and usually takes 5 to 7 working days from the day you order. Printing happens in Delhi NCR.
Our recommendation: order by Monday 26 October. Seven working days from there lands on Wednesday 4 November, which still leaves two days before Dhanteras for a courier delay or a pin code that runs slower than average. If you are sending to a smaller town or to the North East, order by 19 October, before the Dussehra holiday on the 20th. A workable timeline:
- By 12 October: pick the photos. Put them in an album on your phone. Do not edit yet.
- By 19 October: upload them at app.apnistories.com, let the layout build itself, move what looks wrong, write the first page.
- By 26 October: go through the page-by-page preview once more and order.
- 2 to 4 November: the book arrives. Wrap it. Show nobody.
- 6 to 8 November: give it in person, or open it on the video call.
What to write on the first page
This is the part that makes it a gift instead of a print job. It does not need to be long. It needs to be specific and in your own words, not a greeting card’s.
Some shapes that work:
- A date and a fact. “January to October 2026. Twelve trips to the airport, one new flat, zero regrets.”
- A line to the person. “Papa, you said you did not need anything this year. This is nothing. Happy Diwali.”
- For the sibling abroad. “Everything you missed this year, so you can stop asking.”
Keep it under 40 words. Sign it with your name, not “your loving family”, because in ten years someone will want to know exactly who made it.
Give the cover a title too. “Diwali 2026” is fine. “Mummy and Papa in Scotland, April 2026” is better, because it says what is inside without anyone opening it.
One thing to do this week
Open your phone’s gallery, make an album called Diwali Book, and put 60 photos in it. Choosing the photos is the only part that takes real time, and it is the part you cannot rush on 25 October. Once the album exists, the rest is a quiet hour on a weekday evening.
Questions people ask
How many photos do I need for a Diwali photo book? Up to 80 for The Zine, up to 104 for The Classic and up to 128 for The Heirloom. Fewer is usually better; a page with one big photo reads as a gift, a page with four small ones reads as a contact sheet.
