How Many Photos for a Photo Book? Numbers by Page Count

If you have just come back from a trip with 900 photos on your phone, the first real question is how many photos for a photo book actually make sense. This post gives you the numbers: what fits on a page, what each page count holds, how extra pages work, and a way to get 900 photos down to a book you will actually open.

The short answer

Between 20 and 128 photos, depending on the book. For most trips, 60 to 90 is the sweet spot. That is enough to tell the whole story and few enough that every photo gets some room.

Here is what our three books are built to hold:

• The Zine, 10x10 inch, 20 pages: up to about 80 photos. ₹1,499.
• The Classic, A4, 26 pages: up to 104 photos. ₹1,899.
• The Heirloom, A4, 32 pages, lay-flat: up to 128 photos. ₹2,299.

Those are ceilings, not targets. A Classic with 60 photos looks better than a Classic with 90 squeezed in.

How many photos fit on one page?

In photo book counting, a page is one printed side. When the book lies open you are looking at two pages at once. Each page takes one to four photos: one fills the page, two sit side by side or stacked, three and four are grids.

So the maths for any book is pages multiplied by photos per page:

A real book mixes layouts: a full-page photo of the view from the hotel, then a page of four small ones from the market, then one big shot of everyone at dinner. That is where the “up to about” figures come from: roughly two per page on the Zine and three to four per page on the A4 books.

The 10x10 inch square deserves a note. Four photos on a 10 inch page means each one is under 5 inches wide. Two per page is where the Zine looks its best, which is why we say about 80 for it and not 80. What happens with too many photos

The book turns into a contact sheet. Every page is a grid of four, every photo is small, and the one shot you love most, the one that should have been a full page, is the same size as a picture of a parking ticket.

The other thing that happens: repeats. Twelve photos of the same sunset, each a slightly different shade of orange. On your phone you flick past them. On paper they sit next to each other and look like a mistake.

If your first pass lands at 150 photos for a Classic, the answer is not a bigger book. It is a second pass.

What happens with too few

Less common, but it happens with the Zine. Pick 15 photos for a 20-page book and the photos run out before the pages do. Every photo becomes a full page, which is generous for the good ones and unkind to the average ones.

Under about 20 photos, a book is thin on story. You get the highlights but not the in-between: the train window, the plate of food, the queue. Those are the photos that make a book feel like the trip and not like a brochure.

How do extra pages work?

Every book can take up to 10 extra pages at ₹40 a page. So a Classic can go from 26 pages to 36, an Heirloom from 32 to 42, and a Zine from 20 to 30. In photos, that means:

• 10 extra pages at 2 photos per page: 20 more photos for ₹400.
• 10 extra pages at 3 photos per page: 30 more photos for ₹400.

Use extra pages when the trip genuinely has more to say, not to avoid choosing. A Classic at 36 pages with 110 well-spaced photos is a good book. A Classic at 26 pages with 110 photos is a grid.

How to trim a 900-photo trip down to 90

This is the part people dread, and it is quicker than you think:

1. Delete the obvious. Blurry, eyes closed, accidental screenshots, the photo of the menu you took to remember the name of the dish.
2. Kill the duplicates. For every burst of similar shots, keep one. Not two. One.
3. Split the trip into chapters. Day by day, or place by place. Delhi to Manali, Manali to Kasol, and so on.
4. Give each chapter a budget. For a Classic, 6 to 8 chapters at 10 to 15 photos each lands you at 60 to 90 without agonising over the total.
5. Pick one hero per chapter. The shot that gets a full page. Everything else in that chapter is supporting cast and can go two, three or four to a page.
6. Put the people back in. If every photo is scenery, add faces. A mountain without your family in front of it is a postcard.

Which book for which count

A rough rule, based on what looks good rather than what technically fits:

• 20 to 60 photos: the Zine. A weekend, a birthday, one place.
• 60 to 100 photos: the Classic. A proper week-long trip, a family function.
• 100 to 128 photos: the Heirloom. Two weeks or more, a wedding, or anything you want to lie flat on a table without a crease down the middle. The post on lay-flat versus standard binding explains the difference.

One more thing on counting. A customer named Prinshul printed his parents’ UK trip and filmed them opening it. Their reactions became our first reel. Nobody in that video is counting photos. Remember that when you are stuck between 80 and 95.

What to do next

Do not count first. Cull first. Delete the obvious, kill the duplicates, and see where you land. Then pick the book that matches the count rather than the other way round. Questions people ask

How many photos do I need for a 20-page photo book? Between 20 and 40. One per page gives you 20 big photos. Two per page gives you 40. Four per page is possible, but on a 10x10 inch page each photo ends up small.

How many photos for a 26-page A4 book? Between 50 and 90 looks right. The Classic takes up to 104, plus 10 extra pages if a trip needs more.

Can I put more than 4 photos on a page? No. Four per page is the limit on all three books. If you need more, the answer is more pages or a stricter edit, not a denser grid.

What if I have too many photos even for the Heirloom? Add up to 10 extra pages, which takes it to 42 pages. If you are still over, split the trip into two books. A three-week trip is often better as two.

Does the book have to be full? No. You do not need to hit the maximum. A book with some breathing room looks better than one packed to the limit.
