Photo Book for Grandparents That Needs No Phone to Open

Grandparents are the easiest people to print a photo book for and the hardest to buy anything else for. A photo book for grandparents works because it asks nothing of them: no phone, no login, no squinting at a five inch screen. Below is what to put in one, how large to print the photos, why every caption needs a name, and how to collect pictures from the family WhatsApp group without losing a weekend.

Why grandparents are the best audience for a printed book

In most families the photos live on the phones of people under forty. The people who want to see them most are over sixty.

A phone gallery needs a phone, a charged battery, a data connection, the right app, and eyes that can read a small screen. A book needs none of that. It sits on the centre table. It gets opened when the neighbour drops in for chai, when the cousins visit in December, when Nani is alone on a Tuesday afternoon.

Three things make a book work in a grandparent’s house:

No phone needed. Nobody has to log in, scroll, or ask a grandchild to find the album.
Big pages. An A4 page has roughly six times the area of a typical phone screen. Faces are readable without hunting for the reading glasses.
It gets shown to every guest. A phone photo is private by default. A book on the table is public by default. They will hand it to the milkman if he waits long enough.

A fourth reason does not fit in a list. A book says somebody sat down and did this for you. A shared album says somebody tapped share.

What should you include in a photo book for grandparents?

Not everything. Grandparents do not want the 400 photo dump from Goa. They want the people.

Prioritise in this order:

Grandchildren, clearly visible. Faces, not backs of heads. Close enough that expressions are readable.
The whole family in one frame. The wedding group photo, the Diwali line-up, the airport pickup. These are the pages they will show to guests.
Photos of the grandparents themselves. They rarely see good photos of themselves. Put a few in.
Places they know or visited. If they were on the trip, the Taj Mahal photo goes in. If they were not, the sunset over Palolem gets one page at most.
Old photos, scanned. One or two black and white pictures from their own wedding or their children’s childhood. Phone-scan them in good light and keep them to half a page.

Large photos, few per page

This is the one rule we would push hardest for a grandparents’ book. Fewer photos, printed bigger.

Our layout engine allows up to 4 photos per page side. For a grandparents’ book, aim for one or two. A single face filling an A4 page is what the book is for. A grid of four small photos is what the phone already does.

Go A4 if you can. The 10x10 inch Zine is a lovely book, but a tall A4 page shows a portrait photo whole and large, and at ₹1,899 for the Classic the six extra pages are worth it for older eyes. Prices for all three are in the pricing section.

If you run out of room, any of the three books takes up to 10 extra pages at ₹40 per page. For grandparents, spend those pages on bigger photos rather than more of them.

Captions with names, every time

Write names in the captions. Full names for anyone outside the immediate family, and the relation for everyone else. “Aarav, Riya’s son, age 3.” “Sharma uncle and aunty from Rohini.”

Two reasons. First, memory. A grandparent with twelve grandchildren and thirty grand-nieces will not always place a face, and a caption saves them from asking. Second, guests. When Dadi hands the book to a visitor, the visitor reads the names aloud and the conversation starts itself.

Add the place and the month too. “Rishikesh, March 2026” is enough. The habits we use for travel photo book captions apply here, with one change: for grandparents, the person always comes before the place.

The Prinshul story

How to gather photos from the family group

The photos you want are on eight different phones.

Post one message in the family WhatsApp group. Say what you are making and for whom. Give a deadline of one week. Ask for “your 10 best photos of the kids and of Mummy-Papa.”
Ask for originals, not forwards. WhatsApp compresses photos. Ask everyone to send them as a document, or to drop them into a shared Google Photos album. Our guide on going from Google Photos to a photo book covers the album route.
Ask for the old photos separately. One person, usually a bua or a mausi, has the box of prints. Ask her to phone-scan five.
Collect everything into one folder on your phone. Delete duplicates and blurry ones as you go. You want about 30 to 60 for an A4 book.
